Audits are required by law for companies with any two of - turnover over £10.2 million, assets more than £5.1m and more than 50 workers. However, many companies, which are audit exempt, still choose to have a voluntary assurance review. This adds credibility to their accounts and is often carried out to satisfy the requirements of stakeholders such as banks or private investors.
The audit limit for charities is lower at £1m and audits may also be required for grants.
